How it works

Australia's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) gives eligible solar installs a number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), usually taken off the price up front:

  • STCs = system kW × zone rating × deeming years, rounded down to whole certificates.
  • Zone ratingreflects your region's sunshine and is set by postcode by the Clean Energy Regulator (Zone 1 1.622 → Zone 4 1.185).
  • Deeming years count the years left in the scheme: 5 for a 2026 install, falling by one each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
  • Rebate = STCs × STC price. The price floats with the market (capped at $40); installers usually quote a little under that.

Figures reflect 2026 SRES settings — verify the current zone rating and STC price (via the Clean Energy Regulator) when you get a quote.

Frequently asked

Is this calculator free to use?
Yes. The STC rebate calculator is free and needs no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and stores nothing. The figures you enter are not saved or sent anywhere.
How accurate is the estimated rebate value?
The figure is an estimate based on the system size, zone rating, deeming years and STC price you enter. It is not a quote or a guaranteed rebate amount.
