Isolation turns coordination into an operating requirement
The SWIS cannot lean on an interstate interconnector when local rooftop generation rises or falls. Flexible generation, batteries, controllable demand and market coordination must balance the system within its own boundary. That does not make every SWIS result portable, but it makes the cause-and-effect chain easier to inspect.
The rooftop envelope is already wide
Across the retained AEMO WEM daily record, rooftop photovoltaic output at its daily peak averaged 52.4 per cent of the implied underlying-demand proxy and reached 80.8 per cent. The steepest retained minimum-to-evening-peak rise was 2,412 MW. Those are different metrics: the share describes midday displacement, while the ramp describes the later recovery the registered fleet must supply.

Observed facts and future context stay separate
The May 2026 distributed-energy baseline records 3.17 GW of allocated small-scale solar capacity and 0.93 GWh of usable battery energy across the public SWIS extent. Solar Analytica's conditional 2030 range places those observed numbers beside transparent scenarios. AEMO's WEM ESOO remains a separate published forecast. Neither scenario set is allowed to overwrite the operating record.
This separation is the central lesson for other markets. A grid can acknowledge rapid distributed growth without turning a forecast into current capability, and it can measure a stress day without treating it as the average.
